The First Thing You Notice About the Washington State Defense

Mike Ledgerwood wears number 44 and plays linebacker. He's a 6-1 231-lb. junior from Riverview High in Kennewick, sixth on the team last year with 51 tackles. He lettered as a freshman in high school, lettered all four years and made first team All-State as a senior. So far this season he has 16 tackles, 15 solo.

Modest numbers, really. Ledgerwood is a good, hard working player, a journeyman from an in-state program, the kind of kid Washington State needs to fill in the roster. Oregon used to recruit a lot of young men like this back in the day, and some of them turned out to be really good players, like Chad Cota and Jeremy Asher.

But that's not what you notice about Ledgerwood. It's the neckroll. He wears an old-fashioned Nebraska-style neckroll under his jersey and it makes him look like a beastly throwback.

Cool.
