Jeff Maehl Headed for the Ring of Honor

Today Jeff Maehl became the sixth Duck to win a PAC-10 Player of the Week Award, for his 3-touchdown effort versus USC, 8 catches for 145 yards, including a Lynn Swann like leaping, juggling 45-yard touchdown grab that made all the the highlight cutups.

Maehl is putting together a great senior year, something Duck fans had to see coming in fall camp when every practice report included another spectacular catch or another day the Oregon defense had trouble handling him. The fact that Oregon's defense has been so effective in pass efficiency is partially a credit to Maehl, who sharpens the cornerbacks' coverage skills every day in practice.

Through 8 games Maehl has 47 catches for 675 yards and nine tds, and he's gone over a 100 yards receiving in each of the last three games. The Oregon record for touchdowns in a season is 10, shared by 4 players, Demetrius Williams, Tony Hartley, Cristin McLemore and Bobby Moore, and with 4 games to play plus a bowl, Maehl has a chance to move ahead of some very elite company in that category. Sammie Parker holds the single-season reception record with 77, and that's within reach. The career record for td catches is 24, by Keenan Howry, and Maehl is currently at 21.

He's joining some elite company. Currently at 148 career receptions, he's sixth on the list behind Tony Hartley.
