A 40-year dream is nearly a reality

Rob Moseley reports the Ducks' plane departs for Glendale in about twenty minutes. They'll practice Monday. getting seven full days of work before the game.

Up to now it seemed like a dream or a mirage or a distant notion. Now it's set into motion. Believe it, and watch it unfold: the Oregon Ducks are playing Auburn in the national title game. Wow.

  1. You know what's interesting? The dream has only been able to be realized since 1998 when the BCS system was created. Before that, it was just waiting for the rankings to come out after the bowl weekend to see if you were the national champions. Where we are now is kind of a hybrid playoff system, but I like it, 'cause the Ducks are in it!!!!

  2. Chris,

The BCS and the bowl system has its drawbacks and detractors, but it has certainly worked out for the Ducks this year. They survived a 12-game playoff, and now they are in the big game for the first time.

I've always liked the bowls in one way, that the reward for a good season helps developing programs grow. It's been instrumental in the steady progress of Oregon football. I'm not sure a playoff would do the same thing.

    Thanks for your comment.
