Lyerla chooses a great day to become a Duck

Hillsboro's Colt Lyerla verbally commits. Best in-state prospect, probably a linebacker in college. Fast and athletic.

Lyerla has the talent to play several different spots in college, and a lot depends on his physical growth. Oregon does a great job of recruiting and developing fast, athletic players. He could become the hybrid/standup defensive end like Kenny Rowe, or a rangy linebacker. Currently he's 6-5, 225. High school forty times are notoriously unreliable, but most of the services have him around 4.55.

His eventual assignment will be debated among the coaches, and over the years Nick Alliotti has lost a lot of these debates to the Oregon offense. Dynamic playmakers tend to wind up on the offensive side of the ball in the Oregon system.

Speaking strictly as a fan, I'd be intrigued to see them try the 4-star athlete at big receiver. The Ducks' other selections among this year's offensive recruits are 5-8 Tacoi Sumler and 6-1 Devon Blackmon, both slightly-built speed merchants. They'll be great players, but having a strong, fast guy in the inside slot receiver position would be an amazing weapon. Lylerla played running back in high school, and he moves extremely well. The Ducks haven't had a big receiver of his caliber since, probably ever.

  1. I watched the kid during the U.S. Army All-American game and he played phenomenally! The announcers couldn't stop gushing about the kid! Fantastic get for the Ducks!

Oregon commit Christian French made a fantastic hustle play tracking down a speedy undersized RB and preventing the TD.

Blackmon had one long score and dropped a wide-open second opportunity during his AA game as well! Also Duck commit Tacoi Sumler was cited as the fastest athlete on the field during the Under Armor AA game!

The cream usually rises to the top in these high school All-American games and Oregon recruits were making their presence felt throughout.

Currently Rivals has the 2011 class ranked 8th in the nation with 11 4-star recruits! Unbelievable!

    GO DUCKS!

  2. Diceman--

Completely agree that it's been an fantastic recruiting year for the Ducks. particularly if they can land McReynolds and maybe one other top DT. Lylerla has great potential and by all reports he's a leader and a solid character guy as well. Very optimistic also about the linebacker Anthony Wallace, and those two fast receivers could have an immediate impact.

The ratings are encouraging, but the evaluation and development skills of the Oregon staff make it even more of a plus.

Thanks for your comment. Caught Marcus Mariota in another all-star game and he also looks good.
