John Hunt of the Oregonian reported last night that Oregon middle linebacker Kiko Alonso has been arrested and charged with burglary.
The story was posted at 10:42 p.m., so details are sketchy.
Unless this turns out to be a giant misunderstanding or an inflated charge, Alonso is likely done at Oregon. He was arrested for DUII last spring and suspended for a year.
The Ducks were counting on him to replace Casey Matthews at middle linebacker. Coming off knee surgery last year, he was one of the defensive standouts of spring practice and the spring game.
Depth and experience at linebacker, a concern before this, becomes even more critical now. Don Pellum will have to count on Dewitt Stuckey, Derrick Malone and freshman four-star recruit Anthony Wallace to fill the middle.
The arrest puts a damper on the feel-good story of a Spring Game attended by 43,000 people, a salute to the troops and local law enforcement. Like it or not, Alonso has made himself the face and the story for the Ducks this spring. and that is a shame.
Unreal. After such a strong beginning of his comeback from the DUI suspension and the knee injury... So sad.
