2024 Commit Da'Juan Riggs could be a lethal weapon in the Oregon offense

In Washington D.C. prep football the powers are Gonzaga, DeMatha and St. John's College High. NFL number one draft pick Chase Young went to DeMatha. Gonzaga and St. John's have a rivalry that goes back a hundred years. They hold the Championship of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference at the Naval Academy, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Last November, the St. John's Cadets beat DeMatha 7-3 for their second league title in a row and the 13th in school history. In his junior season Da'Juan Riggs powered for 962 yards and 15 touchdowns on 118 carries, averaging 8.2 yards per carry. Lining up in the slot or slipping out of the backfield, he also hauled in 17 passes, good for 165 yards and two more touchdowns.

Riggs committed to the Ducks on Monday, their 18th commitment in the 2024 class and third from the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area, what football scouts call the DMV. It's become another hotbed for elite prospects.

The Cadets use him a lot like the Ducks use Bucky Irving, so you can see why Carlos Locklyn picked him for the case. At Oregon Locklyn tells his running backs, "I'm not going to give you anything. You've got to EARN it." To Da'Juan Riggs, that sounded like a pretty good deal.

He told Adam Friedman of Rivals, "Coach Locklyn and I both have similar backgrounds and I feel like he can get me to where I need to be in life not only as a football player but as a man as well."

Like Irving or 2023 recruit Dante Dowdell, Riggs displays tremendous vision, power and balance. At 6-0, 202 pounds he dominates his league, sometimes making football look ridiculously easy. He's trained at an elite level since middle school, but 118 carries suggests his coaches have done a good job of balancing his workload. With young players that start early, you don't want them to burn out.

At the D.C./Maryland/Virginia UnderArmour Camp this spring Da'Juan showed the receiving ability that gives his game an extra dimension. He's fluid and natural catching the ball, lethal in open space.

When a coaching staff puts together a roster like this, it becomes a ticking time bomb for defensive coordinators. They can clip the red wire or the blue wire, but it doesn't matter: the Ducks will be explosive either way.
