Interesting side note for the LSU game: Darron Thomas was orginally a LSU commit, but Les Miles and the Tigers wanted him as an athlete, not a quarterback. Tom Friend of ESPN related the story in a recent article at espn.com. After a visit to Baton Rouge in which The Hat clumsily greeted him by telling him what a great athlete he was, he came home to high school coach Robert Jones and told him he wanted to reopen his recruiting. A quick call was made to Eugene, and then-offensive coordinator Chip Kelly hopped on a plane to Houston that same day.
Kelly loved Thomas's potential as a quarterback, running a spread offense in high school and displaying a good arm to go along with all that athletic ability. He was a good student also, graduating early to participate in spring drills.
Think DT might have some extra motivation, facing the coach who saw him as a potential wide receiver? Thomas might throw for 400 in the opener, particularly if he and he receivers spend the next seven months developing their timing and chemistry.
Who knows, he may even catch a pass.
