As a rule, I don't comment on officiating a lot. And I don't make excuses. The Ducks had opportunities to win in Glendale, and squandered them. They'll have to play four points better next season, and not give fate or faith or the officials any opportunity to influence the outcome.
This is a site for opinions, commentary and analysis on Duck football. The controversial call on the Dyer run was a big part of the story of the national championship game, and to not address it eventually would have ignored a major element in the game. I gave it a week to marinate, and weighed in.
Within the program, Coach Kelly and the staff will use it as a teachable moment. They will stress tackling technique and playing to the whistle. They will reemphasize never giving up and fighting to the end. And within a very short time they will move forward and challenge the young men to start preparing for a new season. 2010 is done. The Auburn Tigers are the National Champions, and the Ducks have the opportunity to play for their third straight PAC-10 Championship and contend for another BCS bowl game. They have nothing to be ashamed of. They've started a proud tradition in Eugene that Duck fans couldn't have imagined in the bad old days of The Toilet Bowl and The Bottom Ten.
On September 3rd, they get to play LSU in Dallas.
