Smart football is a site for football coaches, junkies and strategy geeks. Few sites go deeper into the x's and o's. Yesterday they had a feature that suggested the National Championship game might be a preview of next year's plan of attack at Oregon.
In the game, Helfrich and Kelly unveiled a modified wishbone look that allowed them to employ two running backs and a slot man, with lots of potential counters, pitches, shovel passes, triple options and inside handoffs. It makes some sense for next season with a full complement of quick, elusive running backs returning, Barner, James, Seastrunk and Williams, coupled by some question marks at the wide receiver position. The write-up includes some play diagrams from the Auburn game.
Looking forward, Coach Kelly will be scheming and evaluating with fiercesome and characteristic dedication in the next few weeks. The offensive output at Oregon has improved every year he's been here, and football doesn't stand still. The Ducks have to stay ahead of defenses, particularly after Auburn blew up the zone-read Monday night, holding the PAC-10 championship to a season-low 75 yards on the ground.
I still like the idea of tearing apart defenses by opening up the passing game. Going in the direction of Air Force, Georgia Tech and Ground Chuck doesn't sound as appealing. Know this, however: the 2011 Ducks will have a lot of weapons, and Kelly will find the best ways to use them.
