Job One: Protect the Quarterback

It's always a good idea to protect the quarterback, but it's doubly important now. And the first thing the Ducks must account for is #97 Cameron Jordan, Cal's 6-4 283-lb. senior defensive end. Jordan had 12 tackles in the Washington State game, 3 for loss, and 1.5 sacks. For the season he has 5.5 sacks, tied for the most on the team with linebacker Mych Kendricks. He must be accounted for.

The Bears hired a new defensive coordinator this year, Clancy Pendergast, who spent 15 years coaching in the NFL. The Bears rank 12th in the country in total defense, allowing just under 300 yards per game and 4.64 yards per play. The strength of the defense is an athletic linebacking corps. They're first in the conference in total defense and sacks.

Oregon still has to run their scheme, and Thomas handles the ball on every play. The offensive line has to be doubly committed to taking care of him and handling the California pressure. It's football, and it's a collision sport, but Thomas has taken too many shots this year.
