OSU's loss and Stanford's big win over Arizona effectively gives Oregon a 2-game lead in the PAC-10 with three games to play. They hold the tiebreaker over Stanford and everyone else has at least two losses. Stanford is likely to move into the top ten after losses by Oklahoma, Missouri, and Alabama. The SEC East has only Florida and South Carolina with winning conference records now, while the West has five ranked teams. Jeremiah Masoli suffered an early concussion against Louisiana-Lafayette, but the Rebels rolled without him.
USC hung on to beat Arizona State 34-33 to go to 6-3, and Stanford thrashed Arizona 42-17. Both wins help the Ducks build strength of schedule, but it doesn't look like they'll need much help at this point.
Cal got to 5-4 with a sloppy 20-13 road victory over the Cougars. Vereen had 112 yards rushing and Mansion was 12-24 for 171 yards and 2 ints. They have been a much tougher team at home, and Oregon hasn't won there very often. The last two trips to Strawberry Canyon were big letdown games. The Bears will be priming themselves for a big effort, facing number one, avenging last year's 48-3 loss, keeping their hopes alive for a decent bowl.
Oregon is 9-0 for the first time in school history, and likely to hang on to the number one ranking in the BCS and the human polls. Some of the computer rankings also have to improve, especially the Massey, which has been hopelessly tilted toward the Big 12.
