Friday Walk-Through: News, Notes and Web Bites for

The crabby fighting Duck knows every week is an improvement week. He can bounce back from a bump on the noggin, stiff arm you at the forty on the way to the five.

The Ducks are off today, with coaches flying out of town to take in some high school football, Nate Costa buck hunting, and Darron Thomas resting a bruised wing. Saturday's practice is a regular Monday and Duck fans will get their first look at who's taking reps and who isn't.

UCLA has injury problems of their own and far less depth to answer them. All-conference safety Rahim Moore is taking reps at cornerback, and starting quarterback Kevin Prince hasn't been healthy since his junior year of high school. He seems to be one of those snake-bitten guys with a world of talent but bum luck. As a high school senior at Crespi High he had a season-ending knee injury early in the year and gave way to a young sophomore named Brian Bennett, who led a loaded squad to the state championship game.

In Thursday night action former Duck Chris Harper caught a 35-yard pass for Kansas State, his long gain of the season, in a 59-7 win over Kansas, the most lopsided in the history of the rivalry. The quarterback who made a permanent slot receiver out of Harper, Carson Coffman, was 15-16 passing for 184 yards and 2 tds. The Wildcats are 5-1 now, 2nd in the Big-12 North behind Nebraska. The old Bill Snyder formula is working its magic, with KSU one game from bowl eligibility and their final game of the year against North Texas. Remember when the bowl eligibility threshold was a big deal for the Ducks?

The crabby fighting Duck doesn't sweat bowl eligibility, or polls, or injuries or anything else. The whole flock has a flight plan, and a stiff arm to the face for any bears that get in the way.
