Moseley Is Right Again

Rob Moseley of the Register-Guard makes a great point in his most recent post, "Enjoy this and let the team worry about win the day." Moseley's right. He's a reporter, and doesn't have a rooting interest, but for us, it would be foolish not to savor this. It's a dream many of us have waited our whole lives even to get a glimpse of.

It's completely appropriate for the Oregon players to think about UCLA and nothing and no one else, but we're fans. We have no such obligation. Many of us go back to the miserable days of 53-0 losses and paycheck games and 3-8 seasons. Many of us sat through the Toilet Bowl and days the Ducks always seemed one injury or one fumble from respectability. Bill Musgrave got the team to 6-1, then got hurt. Dennis Dixon got them to #2, but fell in a heap. The suffering seemed inevitable. Ryan Perry-Smith and Cody Kempt seemed like a inescapable destiny.

Beaver fans used to taunt us about owning the state, and now the Ducks are on the cusp of owning the nation. We should revel in every moment of this. We should save a paper or two, have a glass of wine, and tape or DVR the BCS standings show. Raise your index finger in the air, or give a car with an Oregon flag the "O". Ohio State and Oklahoma fans have had this experience dozens of times. For the Ducks, this is the first number one ranking in 115 years. Just drink it in.

Maybe it ends this week, or maybe it doesn't end at all. 6-0, number one in the country, and their destiny is in their own hands. Let's savor the days that have already been won, and just enjoy the days that are yet to be.
