Myths, Assumptions and Stupid Statements: "Tennessee lost because they abandoned the run."

Tennessee didn't abandon the run. It just stopped working, and then they got behind and had to pass. Here's an excerpt from the third quarter play-by-play:

3rd and 11 at TENN 17 Matt Simms pass incomplete to Justin Hunter.
4th and 11 at TENN 17 Chad Cunningham punt for 42 yards, fair catch by Kenjon Barner at the Oregn 41.
DRIVE TOTALS: TENNESSEE drive: 6 plays 11 yards, 03:02 TENNESSEE PUNT

Shortly after this sequence, Oregon added two more scores. By the time the Vols got the ball back in the fourth quarter they were down three touchdowns. As Ken Woody pointed out, the Ducks improved their positioning, alignment and tackling in the second half, limiting UT's offense to three first downs. For the game they ran 36 times, with great early effectiveness, but far less success as the Ducks adjusted to their formations. They weren't going to win with three yards and a cloud of dust.

  1. Tenn fan here...
I wrote that we weren't going to win by trying to slog this one out. We tried and didn't.
The running game was so explosive in the first half because, as Derek Dooley said on his Sunday highlight show, UT threw some offensive sets that had slight wrinkles of which Oregon had never seen.
    Oregon adjusted.
Tennessee does not have the personnel to get to far away from a run offense from a power-I type set.
We now see what we have, which tells me that a 5-7 record will be about right, but only if our forces are not too banged up before we reach the easy schedule of November - then it won't be easy.
As far as the Ducks, I sincerely wish you nothing but the best. You guys are a class act - players, coaches, and fans.
We'll get back together in 2013 in Eugene. I'll be there ready to soak up the experience of Eugene on game week and game day.

  2. Norcalvol--

Thank you for your observations. Duck fans who visited Knoxville have raved about the reception and hospitality of the Volunteer fans.

That's a great point from Coach Dooley's highlight show. The Oregon writers indicated the same thing, that the Ducks had trouble early with the unbalanced line sets early in the game. It was a smart scheme.

With four teams ranked in the top 15 in the next six weeks, the Vols have a world of challenges ahead. You host #10 Florida, then UAB, and then it's at LSU, at Georgia, host #1 Alabama and at South Carolina all in a row. Truly it doesn't let up in the SEC.

Coach Dooley and his staff will have an awesome challenge to get this young team to continue to believe in themselves and work for the future. There is some great talent--Poole's a junior, those tall, speedy receivers are true freshman; they had a great recruiting class. They've got to keep competing and improving.

In turn I wish the Vols and Vol fans the best of luck the rest of the way. You showed us a lot about tradition and class this week, and you were very gracious.

Thank you for contributing to the Duck Stops Here, and we'll see you in 2013.

    Best wishes,

    Dale

  3. I was never concerned we'd win and even cover the spread. The Vols were playing with raw emotion and not real talent. In other words, playing too hard. I knew that somewhere in the second quarter or start of the third they'd run out of gas and we'd start rolling. This team is so mature in how they approach games.
